Background of the Study
Health behavior change is critical in addressing public health challenges such as smoking cessation, vaccination uptake, and lifestyle modifications. Traditional health education campaigns often struggle to capture public interest, but the use of celebrity endorsements has emerged as a powerful tool in influencing public health behaviors (WHO, 2024). Celebrities, as influencers, have the potential to shape public attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors by leveraging their popularity and credibility (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).
In Nigeria, celebrity endorsements have been widely used in campaigns for malaria prevention, COVID-19 vaccination, and reproductive health awareness. However, the effectiveness of such endorsements in influencing health-related behavior remains a subject of debate. In Kwara State, where cultural and socioeconomic factors influence health decisions, the role of celebrity endorsements in driving behavior change needs further investigation. This study examines the effect of celebrity endorsements on health behavior change in Kwara State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite increased investment in celebrity-driven health campaigns, the extent to which these endorsements influence behavior change remains uncertain. Some studies suggest that while celebrity endorsements raise awareness, they do not always lead to sustained behavioral changes due to factors such as misinformation, lack of credibility, and audience skepticism (Abubakar & Hassan, 2024).
This study seeks to assess the impact of celebrity endorsements on health behavior change in Kwara State, evaluating the effectiveness of such campaigns and identifying potential limitations.
